After a period of dormancy in the roadster segment, MG has returned to its roots for its 100th anniversary, bringing forth the Cyberster—an electric roadster that melds the brand’s rich heritage with futuristic technology. Which has now made its grand entrance as the first electric roadster to hit the Nepali market, marking a significant moment for car enthusiasts. 

Roadsters, with their sleek designs and open-top charm, have long been dream machines for many. But in Nepal, where the roads are often far from ideal—think endless potholes, sudden digs for water or electricity, and the occasional speed bump that feels more like a small hill—such cars have always felt out of reach, both in practicality and price.

The wide tires—measuring 245/45 at the front and an even beefier 275/40 at the rear—sit on 19-inch aerodynamic alloy wheels with red Brembo brake calipers at the front that strike the perfect balance between function and form.

Other noteworthy details include the sleek black side skirts proudly bearing MG’s 100th-anniversary badge and, of course, the open-top setup. Finishing off the rear is a well-proportioned diffuser, tying together a look that’s equal parts style and substance.

The interior sports a sophisticated black and matte red color scheme, striking the perfect balance between boldness and comfort.

The seats are electronically adjustable, equipped with memory functions and heating, ensuring a comfortable ride regardless of the season. The driver’s seat is positioned low, as a proper roadster seat should be, offering a sporty, close-to-the-road feel. The flat-bottom steering wheel, heated, and adorned with leather and silver trims, is a visual and tactile delight.

Packed with physical buttons, it scores high on functionality and avoids the pitfalls of over-reliance on touch controls. The steering wheel’s tilt and telescopic adjustments make finding the perfect driving position easy, though taller drivers might struggle as the headroom starts to disappear beyond 5 feet 10 inches.

The dashboard is a high-tech haven, cocooning the driver with premium materials and an array of four screens. A 10.25-inch curved driver’s display provides essential information, flanked by two 7-inch screens for infotainment and vehicle controls, including Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Additionally, a dedicated touchscreen on the center console manages climate control, drive modes, and other functionalities, making the interface both futuristic and practical.

The convertible fabric roof is a standout feature, opening effortlessly at the push of a button to transform the Cyberster into a true open-top experience. Whether cruising along scenic routes or basking in the sun, this roof adds a dynamic edge to the driving experience.

Storage is minimal yet thoughtfully designed, staying true to the roadster ethos. The 249-liter boot is sufficient for a couple of soft bags, perfect for weekend getaways. A central cubby between the seats offers additional convenience for smaller items, enhancing everyday usability. Powered by a single motor and rear-wheel drive (RWD), this electric roadster produces a potent 250 kW of power, translating into an exhilarating driving experience. It comes equipped with four distinct driving modes: Comfort, Sport, Custom, and a “Super Sport” mode, which can be activated with a red button on the steering wheel. In Super Sport, the Cyberster unleashes its full potential, accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5 seconds—an impressive feat that rivals some of the quickest cars on the market today.

The suspension setup, paired with low-profile tires, gives the Cyberster a firm ride, making it feel responsive and agile but also a bit bumpy on rough roads. This is where the car shines, though—on smooth tarmac, it’s an absolute joy to drive. The low center of gravity, paired with wider rear tires (275/40) and narrower front tires (245/45), gives the car an excellent grip on the road. The Pirelli P Zero tires offer outstanding traction, ensuring the Cyberster sticks firmly to the pavement, no matter how sharp the corner. This design gives the car remarkable handling, turning flat and with precision, making it perfect for spirited driving enthusiasts.

Braking is another area where the Cyberster impresses. Equipped with Brembo brakes, the car stops on a dime, providing exceptional stopping power that instills confidence in any driving scenario. While the car has a low 120mm ground clearance—something that may not be a dealbreaker for most buyers—those driving in regions with poor road conditions, like Nepal, should exercise caution to avoid scraping on potholes or rough surfaces.

Despite these potential challenges, the Cyberster makes urban navigation quite manageable. It comes with a 360-degree camera system that helps with parking and maneuvering, though the steering wheel may occasionally obstruct part of the view on the right side of the screen. One benefit of the Cyberster’s design is its visibility—you can easily see the far reaches of the bonnet, making it easier to navigate tight spaces without the usual roadster visibility struggles. However, navigating through the urban jungle is only easy if the roads are in decent condition, as the firm suspension can make bumpy roads feel harsh.

Powering this beast is a 77 kWh battery, which MG claims offers a range of 507 km on a full charge. In real-world driving conditions, however, that number will likely be closer to 400 to 450 km, especially if you’re indulging in the car’s performance capabilities. After all, no one is going to drive this roadster like a family hatchback—every red light is an opportunity for a quick sprint, and that will naturally drain the battery faster.

Charging the Cyberster is convenient, thanks to its support for DC fast charging up to 144 kW, which can charge the battery from 0 to 80% in just 30 minutes, making long road trips more feasible. However, in places like Nepal, where fast charging infrastructure isn’t as widespread, you’ll have to rely on a 60 kW charger. With this setup, the Cyberster will take about 1.5 hours to fully charge. Alternatively, using a 7 kW AC home charger, you can expect a full charge in around 10 to 11 hours, which is perfect for overnight charging.

The MG Cyberster offers the closest supercar experience we’ve gotten to date, blending blistering performance with cutting-edge technology and striking design. With its lightning-fast 0-100 km/h time of just 5 seconds and precise handling, it feels every bit like a high-performance machine, yet it manages to be more efficient than your average fuel-powered family hatchback. This roadster provides thrilling acceleration, tight cornering, and a heart-racing drive, all while offering the advantages of an electric powertrain—lower running costs, reduced emissions, and a more sustainable future. What’s not to love?

At a price of 1.68 crore, the MG Cyberster is by no means inexpensive. However, it marks a monumental shift in making the dream of owning a roadster more accessible than ever before. While the ground clearance may seem low, it’s not a flaw—it’s what makes a roadster a roadster. Expecting a lofty 230 mm clearance in a car designed for performance and agility simply doesn’t align with its purpose. 

The real challenge isn’t the car; it’s the state of the roads in this country. But even then, for the passionate driver who sees a roadster as a symbol of freedom and adventure, these concerns take a backseat to the pure joy of driving.

The Cyberster may not be the most practical choice, and let’s face it—no one is buying it for practicality. So why buy it, then? Because it’s a dream realized, something few people will ever experience. It’s a car that makes a statement, one that lets you stand out in a way that no ordinary vehicle can.
